The ages of France in the book
The book covers almost 2000 years of the French history and you will find these stories in 400 pages. Easy to follow if you are interested and used to the history books, the first pages cover the dark & medieval ages. From Clovis I, from the House of Valois to Napoleon III, the book covers the stages of French history.
The second part of it talks about the French Revolution, the 2 World Wars and Civil Wars. You will also find some interesting facts about the liberation of France from Nazi occupation in 1944.
Although there are lots of information, the book is engaging. If you would like to know more detailed facts from French history, you will learn a lot from this lecture.
The French history for the curious ones
John Julius Norwich does great documentation on the history of France. So the book is brilliantly written, the information is nicely structured and the research is so well detailed. The author admits that he would have liked to write more about the culture and the daily life of old France.
It’s easy to figure out that the author adores France. From the way, he speaks about the great Age of Charlemagne or the Carolingian kings, the Crusades, the court of Louis XIV, or the Revolution. Although you won’t find much about people’s history, as the author was mentioning, you will learn about the country’s growth and development. Here are true facts about religion and empire, royalty and peasants, religion and empire and so on.
