It’s Welshie time again…in case you haven’t noticed yet, a big part of my bookshelves are occupied by Irvine Welsh. “The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs” holds a special place in my heart, as it was a gift from a dear friend and fellow Badger.
Let me introduce you to Danny Skinner and Brian Kibby
Let me start by saying it’s not about Chefs and it’s not about sex. The story develops as an antithesis between the two main characters, Danny Skinner and Brian Kibby, two restaurant inspectors in Edinburgh, one a hard-drinking, Rimbaud reading hooligan, the other a train model enthusiast and a Trekkie.
Danny’s life is spiraling downwards, searching for his father, drinking every day, getting into fights, being left by his girlfriend, while Brian’s is right on course. Needless to say, there is a strong antipathy between the two. The plot thickens when the effects of Danny’s out of control life are transferred to Brian. While it is Danny who drinks all night, it’s Brain who gets the hangovers, the liver failure, the bruises from the fights Danny gets into. How all this ends, I’ll let you discover on your own.
How The Bedroom Secrets of Master Chefs impacted this reading Badger
While I definitely got the feeling of a Welsh book while reading it, it is quite different from the drug-filled atmosphere of his previous books, but I do miss the witty dialog he has accustomed his reader with, that I feel is lacking from “The Bedroom Secrets“.
All in all, I do recommend this book to all the readers who enjoy a weird story with a twisted plot.
