I will start off by saying…. I love this book written by John Niven. It’s easy to read, it’s funny, I actually laughed out loud while reading it and the subject that is clear from the title, the second coming of Jesus Christ on earth, is less controversial than it may seem at first glance.
How a Badger would describe the book
The book begins with God, returning from a week vacation (some 400 years in earth time). When he sees the state of the world, he decides to send his son to Earth again (Jesus had been spending quality time in heaven with Jimi Hendrix, smoking weed and playing guitar).
Jesus is born again, in the USA, and by the time he is in his early 30’s we find him in New York, trying to help people who need him and trying to get his band some notoriety. One of his bandmates suggests that he should audition for an American Idol-esque reality show to get his word across to people. There he encounters a Simon Cowell like figure, that may as well be the devil.
The style of the writing makes the book very easy flowing, and there is a deep moral sense behind the satirical, humorous story of Jesus’s life on earth this second time.
Final words and thoughts
I know this book is not for everyone, I get that the title and the whole idea of Jesus being a good-looking, guitar playing, weed smoking rock star will be hard to swallow for some readers, but if you can get past that, you will find a book about what we, as humans can do, to live in a better world and to accept the differences that should bring us together.
